Advances in digital imaging in general and full-field digital mammography (FFDM) in particular have led to development of digital breast tomosynthesis imaging systems for 3D breast examinations.
The 3D tomosynthesis is a new tool in breast imaging that increases the diagnostic accuracy in the detection of breast cancer.
The technique concerning the placement of the breast and the pressure is similar to that of digital mammography, but in contrast to this, in tomosynthesis the machinery offers the possibility of movement in different planes, taking many different images and splitting the breast parenchyma sectioned in mm with very low radiation dose. Then, all these digital tomographic slices are reconstructed into sections covering the whole breast parenchyma. The technique of tomosynthesis offers more detailed images and its application in clinical practice has been shown to increase diagnostic accuracy and specificity of the method, especially in women with dense breasts. Furthermore it is equally important to implement this new technique in women with a previous surgery for breast malignancy.
